THINGS TO DO IN CAMBRIDGE

Side view of a grand historical English chapel in Cambridge.

My mum and I go to Cambridge!

We share the best highlights from our two-day trip. From historical buildings, museums, activities to food and drink. In order of our favourite first, below you can find things to do in Cambridge City right now.

Museum of Zoology

A brunette woman standing in front of a mammoth skeleton display in a museum.

Price: FREE
Duration: 1.5-2 hours
What to expect: You can see bone, bones and more bones of every form of animal life possible.

My highlights: It was fascinating to see the skeletons of mammoths, sabre tooth tigers and giant sea creatures on display. I had no idea that snakes had ribcages and to see the evolution from ape to human on show.

The Fitzwilliam Museum

Top of the staircase with a grand entrance surrounded by sculptures and historical art with a brunette women posing at the top.

Price: FREE
Duration: 1.5-2 hours
What to expect: Behold and look at notable works of art from sculptures, paintings and historical artefacts worldwide.

My highlights: I found the artwork in the galleries inspirational. Each painting tells a unique story. Ancient Egyptian sarcophagi and Greek godlike sculptures have always been more of interest to me.

Scudamore’s

A line of parked punting boats on the river in Cambridge.

Price: £40-£70
Duration: 1-1.5 hours
What to expect: It is not all about universities; Cambridge is also famous for punting! From self-hire, shared and private guided tours.

My highlights: We did the college back shared punting tour experience, where we got to relax, enjoy the sun, float down River Cam and appreciate the views. The punter had a wealth of knowledge and entertaining stories to tell. He made it more than just a boat ride. We also got punted underneath the Mathematical Bridge.

Roof Terrace at the Varsity Hotel

Price: £30+ (depending on how much you want to drink)
Duration: 1-2 hours
What to expect: a 360-degree view of Cambridge and a great shot of St John’s Chapel. A hip place to hang out, socialise and sip on cocktails.

My highlights: Cocktail time! I enjoyed drinking raspberry daiquiris, snacking on olives, absorbing the sun, and admiring the landscape of Cambridge. After all that sightseeing, this was our downtime after much walking, punting and posing at the camera – well deserved!

Afternoon Tea at Six

Close up of blue and white striped tea set with a red menu leaning against a window with a background view of Cambridge city.

Price: £50+ (for 2 people)
Duration: 1 hour
What to expect: Afternoon tea with a fantastic landscape view of Cambridge City!

My highlights:  We loved the restaurant atmosphere and the food and drink, from the sophisticated interior, stunning views and superb service. My mum and I enjoyed traditional afternoon tea with freshly made sandwiches and cakes.

Cambridge Market Square

Price: FREE (depending on how much you want to buy)
Duration: 1+ hour
What to expect: Historic market stalls selling arts, clothes, handmade jewellery, books, music, fresh food and even bubble tea.

My highlights: My favourite stall sold rare semi-precious rocks. We also ordered yummy Malaysian street food and came across a bike repair stall – not something you see every day.

St John’s College

The side of St John's College Chapel

Price: £10
Duration: 2-3 hours
What to expect: Covid update: unfortunately, St John’s College was closed to visitors and the public when we went.

My highlights: When the opportunity arises, I will tour all the colleges and revisit Cambridge. For this time, we appreciated the buildings from the outside. The architecture and exterior of St John’s College and chapel are grand and fantastic to photograph and take selfies.

King’s College Chapel and Grounds

Price: £10
Duration: 2-3 hours
What to expect: No availability on the date we went. Highly recommend checking the dates and times beforehand (do not make the mistake we did).

My highlights: The famous King’s College is the centre of attraction in Cambridge. Once again, we could only admire and appreciate this historical architecture from the outside. Until next time.
